Windies still trailing despite improved bowling on Day 2 in Wellington
The West Indies face an uphill battle after stumps on Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve, despite a disciplined effort from their seam attack.
Set back by a 73-run first-innings deficit, the Caribbean side reached 32 for 2 in their second innings at the close — still 41 runs away from making New Zealand bat again, with eight wickets in hand.
Jamaica’s Brandon King, unbeaten on 15, and Kavem Hodge on 3 will resume the rescue mission on Day 3. Back in the pavilion are opener John Campbell, who made 14, and night-watchman Anderson Phillip, dismissed without scoring. Jacob Duffy and Michael Rae claimed a wicket each for the hosts.
Earlier, the Black Caps — resuming on their overnight 24 without loss — pushed their way to 278 for 9, with the injured Blair Tickner not batting, to secure a crucial first-innings lead. Devon Conway struck 60, while Mitchell Hay top-scored with 61 as New Zealand built steady partnerships throughout the day.
Phillip led the West Indies’ response with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 73 in a spirited spell. Kemar Roach supported well with 2 for 43, while Ojay Shields, Jayden Seales, Justin Greaves and Roston Chase each picked up a wicket to keep the hosts from running away with the game.
Scores:
West Indies 205 & 32 for 2; New Zealand 278 for 9.
