Windies face uphill battle heading into day 5 of first South Africa Test
Despite only two hours of play being possible due to the inclement weather conditions, West Indies are facing an uphill task at stumps on the rain-affected fourth and penultimate day of the first Test against South Africa at Queens Park Oval in Trinidad.
Rain has affected every day of this Test so far. It seemed as if play wouldn’t get underway today as more than 50mm of rain in some areas of the island had raised a yellow-level alert. But, after a six hour delay, play did start at Queen’s Park Oval.
Resuming on their overnight 145 for 4, West Indies were bowled out for 233, losing their last six wickets for 88 runs to trail by 124 on first innings.
Overnight batsmen Kavem Hodge and Jason Holder went on to make 25 and 36 having started the day on 11 and 13 respectively.
Jomel Warrican the top batsman on the day for the Windies made an unbeaten 35 against Keshav Maharaj who took 4 for 76 and Kagiso Rabada 3 for 56.
Batting in their second innings South Africa reached 30 without loss at close of play for an overall lead of 154 with Tony de Zorzi (14) and Aiden Markram (9) the not out batsmen.
The teams will return for an early start on the fifth and final day where 98 overs are scheduled to be bowled, weather permitting, after most of Saturday’s play lost to rain.
