West Indies Women set sights on improving middle over performance ahead of game two against Bangladesh

After a dominant 8-wicket win in the first game of their T20 International series against Bangladesh, West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews is determined to improve her team’s bowling performance in the middle overs ahead of the second game on Wednesday at Warner Park in St. Kitts.

In Monday’s game, the West Indies comfortably chased down 145, reaching the target in just 16.5 overs. Matthews led from the front with the bat, hitting seven boundaries in composed 60 not out off 54 balls, while the explosive Deandra Dottin provided a breathtaking display of power-hitting. Dottin slammed seven sixes in a whirlwind 51* off just 22 balls, setting a new record for the fastest half-century in T20I history. Together, Matthews and Dottin shared a 72-run partnership for the third wicket, which helped guide the Windies to an easy victory and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

However, Matthews remains focused on the areas that need improvement. Despite the impressive chase, she believes that West Indies can bolster their bowling, particularly in the middle overs, where they’ll be looking to stem the flow of runs and restrict the opposition.

Those middle overs that we bowled, we [probably] weren’t the best and let them get a few too many runs and then the opportunities that we [probably] didn’t take in the field (are) two crucial areas to improve on,” Matthews said in her post-match reflections. “We just need to not get complacent [obviously] go out and play every game from scratch.”

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be looking to build on their promising 82-run third-wicket partnership between captain Nigar Sultana Joty, who made an unbeaten 53, and Sharmin Akter, who contributed 37. Despite the strong effort from their middle order, Bangladesh slipped to 43 for 2 after 7.3 overs and could not recover from the early setbacks.

Victory for the Windies would see them take an unassailable 2-0 lead while a win for the visitors would lead to a winner take all third and final game on Friday.
