West Indies Women on the brink after heavy defeat to Pakistan in World Cup Qualifier
The West Indies Women are now in serious danger of missing out on a place at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India, following a crushing 65-run loss to Pakistan at the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Lahore.
Chasing a target of 192, the Caribbean side stumbled out of the gate and never recovered. Captain Hayley Matthews, one of the team’s most experienced and influential players, was dismissed for a first-ball duck. From there, the Windies slipped to a precarious 54 for 5 in just 11.3 overs and were eventually bowled out for 126.
Aaliyah Alleyne (22) and Shabika Gajnabi (21) provided brief resistance, with additional contributions from Stafanie Taylor (17), Jannillea Glasgow (18), Shemaine Campbelle (14), and Chinelle Henry (14), but it wasn’t enough to recover from the early collapse.
Pakistan’s bowling attack proved too much for the Windies to handle, with Fatima Sana leading the way with figures of 3 for 16. She was ably-supported by Rameen Shamim (2 for 26) and Nashra Sandhu (2 for 31), as Pakistan clinched their third straight victory in the tournament.
Earlier, Pakistan posted 191 all out in 49.5 overs after winning the toss and opting to bat. Sidra Amin top-scored with 54, while opener Muneeba added 33. Sidra Nawaz (23) and Aliya Riaz (20) also chipped in.
For the West Indies, Hayley Matthews had a strong showing with the ball, finishing with 2 for 30. Afy Fletcher (2 for 39) and Karishma Ramharack (2 for 55) also had multiple wickets, while Ashmini Munisar and Matthews shared the remaining dismissals.
Final Scores:
Pakistan Women – 191 all out (49.5 overs)
West Indies Women – 126 all out (36.2 overs)
Result: Pakistan won by 65 runs
The defeat leaves the West Indies third from the bottom of the table with just two points from three matches. Meanwhile, Pakistan sits atop the standings with a perfect record of three wins from three games.
With only a two qualification spots available, the West Indies must now win their remaining matches — starting with a crucial clash against Bangladesh on Wednesday — and hope other results go their way to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
