West Indies Women off to losing start in ODI series against India

West Indies Women will need to win on Tuesday if they are to have any hopes of taking the three-match One Day International series against India after they suffered a massive 211 run defeat in Sunday’s opening game at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

The hosts dominated from start to finish, scoring an imposing 314 for 9 after being inserted to take first strike before returning to skittle the visitors for 103 in 26.2 overs.

The architects of the win for India were opener Smriti Mandhana, who top scored with 91 and Renuka Singh, who took a career-best 5 for 29, including the prized scalps of Hayley Matthews (0) and Deandra Dottin (8) inside the first five overs of the chase.

Mandhana who slammed 13 boundaries shared in a vital opening wicket partnership worth 110 with Pratika Rawal who made 40 before putting on a 50-run second wicket stand with Harleen Deol who contributed 44.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also added 34 against Zaida James who grabbed 5 for 45 to lead the Windies bowling unit while Hayley Matthews took 2 for 61.

At their turn to bat, West Indies Women lost both openers – Mathews and Qiana Joseph – who went without scoring and further sank to 11 for 4 after 5.2 overs after the dismissals of Dottin and Rashada Williams who made 3.

Afy Fletcher 24 not out, Shemaine Campbelle 23, Aaliyah Alleyne 13 and Karishma Ramharack 11 were the batters into double figures as Singh claimed her maiden ODI five-for.

The result gave India Women their second largest win margin by runs in women’s ODI’s, surpassing the 207-run win over Pakistan in Dambulla in 2008 and only bettered by the 249-run mauling of Ireland in Potchefstroom in 2017.
