West Indies Women fall to heavy defeat in series decider against South Africa

A subpar batting display from the West Indies Women saw them slump to a 166-run defeat via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the rain-affected third One Day International (ODI) against South Africa Women at the Three W’s Oval in Barbados on Monday.

The result handed the South Africans a 2-1 victory in the three-match ODI series.

Chasing a DLS-adjusted target of 298 runs from 45 overs, the West Indies found themselves in deep trouble early, losing their first six wickets for just 40 runs in the opening 15.2 overs. A spirited 65-run seventh-wicket partnership between Aaliyah Alleyne (32) and Jahzara Claxton, who top-scored with a fighting 43, offered a glimmer of hope. However, the resistance was short-lived as the Caribbean side was eventually bowled out for 121.

Only Shemaine Campbelle (12) joined Alleyne and Claxton in reaching double figures in an otherwise poor batting display.

South Africa’s bowlers were clinical, with Masabata Klaas leading the attack with impressive figures of 4 for 25. Nonkululeko Mlaba (2 for 25) and Annerie Dercksen (2 for 1) provided excellent support, wrapping up the West Indies innings with more than five overs to spare.

Earlier in the day, South Africa raced to 278 for 6 in 45.5 overs after being sent in to bat. The innings was headlined by a commanding 184-run opening partnership between Tasmin Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt. Brits anchored the innings with a superb 101 off 91 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes, while Wolvaardt contributed a fluent 75 with seven boundaries.

Rain halted play late in the innings, leading to an adjustment of South Africa’s total to 298 under the DLS method.

Among the West Indies bowlers, Afy Fletcher was the most successful, picking up 3 for 53, while captain Hayley Matthews, Aaliyah Alleyne, and Jahzara Claxton each claimed a wicket.

With the ODI series concluded, both teams now turn their attention to the first of three T20 Internationals, which gets underway on June 20.
