West Indies go one-nil down after 21-run defeat to England in T20 Series opener
The West Indies suffered a 21-run loss in the opening match of the three-match T20 International series against England at Chester-le-Street, Durham, leaving them one-nil behind in the contest.
Chasing a target of 189, the Windies were limited to 167 for 9 despite a promising third-wicket partnership of 58 runs between Evin Lewis, who top-scored with 39, and Roston Chase, who contributed 24 runs. Left-arm orthodox spinner Liam Dawson led England’s bowling attack with an impressive 4 for 20, dismissing Chase, Johnson Charles (18), Sherfane Rutherford (2), and Rovman Powell (13).
Earlier, England won the toss and opted to bat first, posting a competitive total of 188 for 6. Jos Buttler was the standout performer with a well-paced 96 off 59 balls, supported by Jamie Smith’s 38 and Jacob Bethell’s unbeaten 23.
Romario Shepherd was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, taking 2 for 33, while Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, and Andre Russell each claimed a wicket.
The Windies will look to bounce back in the second and penultimate match of the series, scheduled for Sunday in Bristol.
