Water Prohibition Orders could be extended to Manchester and Clarendon

Written bySugar Ray Thomas

The Water Prohibition Orders, now in effect for eastern parishes, could be extended to Manchester and Clarendon.

That is according to Water Minister Matthew Samuda.

He was speaking at the commissioning of phase two of the Spring Gardens Water Supply Project in St. James yesterday.

Implemented on Monday the orders apply to Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, St. Mary, Portland, St. Ann and St. Catherine.

It prohibits persons from using water supplied by the National Water Commission (NWC), for non-essential purposes.

Mr. Samuda reiterated that the El Nino phenomenon will likely impact the country’s rainfall period from September to October.

He said, over 80 of the NWC’s water systems are being negatively affected by drought conditions.

He added that up to yesterday, the Hermitage Dam was at 31% of its water capacity.

Mr. Samuda also called on the 2,000 beneficiaries of Spring Gardens Water Supply Project to practice water conservation measures.
