Vaz to write OUR insisting probe into complaints over spike in electricity bills
Energy Minister Daryl Vaz says he will formally write to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) today insisting that a probe be conducted into several complaints over major spikes, in citizens’ electricity bills.
At the weekend, scores of customers took to social media to express their discontent with massive increases in their Jamaica Public Service (JPS) light bills.
They are upset that despite having their power disrupted for long periods following Hurricane Beryl last month, they are required to pay exorbitant fees.
Reacting to the issue, Mr. Vaz notes that there have been instances where the JPS bills have increased by 100 per cent for customers who were known to be without power for up to a month.
He said this development is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vaz is calling on JPS President Hugh Grant to provide an explanation to its customers.
He said this recent development must be viewed as an opportunity to carry out a full investigation into the billing cycle of the company.
