The Vatican’s Press Office has revealed that Pope Francis died of a stroke and subsequent irreversible heart failure.

According to the Pope’s death certificate, he had fallen into a coma before his death early this morning.

As the BBC reports, the Pope had previously stated how he wished to be buried.

Meantime, the leaders of Jamaica’s two main political parties have expressed sadness at the passing of Pope Francis.

The 88-year-old died this morning after spending more than a month in hospital due to a respiratory infection.

He was the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church.

In a statement this morning, Prime Minister and Leader of the governing Jamaica Labour Party, Dr. Andrew Holness, described Pope Francis as a champion and advocate for change.

He lauded him for using his papacy to highlight issues of fairness, equity, and climate change.

The Prime Minister expressed condolences to the Catholic community, Christians and all who mourn the death of Pope Francis.

Meantime, Opposition Leader and President of the People’s National Party, Mark Golding said Pope Francis’ life was a testament to spiritual devotion, moral clarity and a tireless, progressive commitment to unity and human dignity.

Noting that the Catholic Church holds a respected place in Jamaica’s cultural and spiritual life, Mr. Golding also extended condolences to members of the denomination.
