UWI pledges to dedicate research and expertise to fight mpox
The University of the West Indies (UWI) has pledged to dedicate its considerable research and expertise to help face any challenge associated with M-pox.
In a statement this afternoon, Vice-Chancellor of the UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles said the University has noted the declaration by the World Health Organization of the virus as a health emergency of international concern.
He said as the leading university in the Caribbean, the UWI commits to working with regional partners on this matter.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the UWI acquired cutting-edge virus sequencing technology during the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be redeployed against M-pox to provide strong early detection mechanisms.
He said the UWI has the capabilities in its laboratories to make rapid and accurate diagnosis of M-pox.
He said the UWI will work closely with regional Ministries of Health, the Caribbean Public Health Authority (CARPHA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to respond to any introduction of the virus in the region.
