Utech students displaced by St Andrew fire being temporarily housed on campus
The University of Technology students displaced by yesterday’s fire at an apartment complex in St Andrew are being temporarily housed on campus.
President of the students union Rick Darby told Irie Fm news that following the incident, the university responded and is supporting the affected students.
He said the majority of the students lost personal items such as clothing and electronic devices.
Darby said arrangements are being made to help the students with classes they missed yesterday and may miss in the coming days, due to having lost school essentials, in the fire.
He said the students are also getting psychological support.
Meantime, Education Minister Fayval Williams has expressed relief that the 21 Utech students were unharmed in the fire.
The minister expressed appreciation to Utech’s administration for their immediate response to rally support, including accommodation, for the students.
She said the Grace Foundation has provided food packages to the affected students, and urged others in the corporate sector to also assist them.
