USA to hold further dialogue with Jamaica regarding Cuban medical programme

U S Secretary of State Marco Rubio says further dialogue will be held with Jamaica for a better understanding of the operation of the Cuban medical mission programme.

The programme has been placed under the spotlight after the u s authorities said it would impose visa restrictions on officials of countries participating in the programme.

There has been concern in Jamaica about the potential impact as the health system is supported by the Cuban mission.

The matter was discussed at bilateral talks today with Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness and Secretary Rubio.

Mr. Rubio noted that the issue relates to labour concerns.

The U S official expressed a willingness to have more discussions about the Cuban medical mission with Jamaican authorities.

Meantime, Holness said Jamaica is careful not to exploit the Cuban doctors working here.
