US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to visit Jamaica this week
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Jamaica this week.
The US Department of State announced today that Mr. Rubio will be travelling to the Caribbean on Wednesday and Thursday March 26 and 27.
He will also visit Guyana and Suriname.
The Department of State says the visit is to advance US President Donald Trump’s U.S. foreign policy priorities in the Caribbean.
While in Jamaica, the Secretary will also hold bilateral engagements with heads of state from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti.
According to a statement, Secretary Rubio’s engagements with Caribbean partners will promote regional cooperation to end illegal immigration, counter transnational organized crime, strengthen regional actions to address Haiti’s political and security challenges, and strengthen the United States’ economic partnerships with Caribbean countries.
The visit comes as Caribbean leaders review the impact of some U.S. policies on Caribbean economies, among them the Cuban Medical Cooperation Programme.
