US President Trump announces 10 % tariff on exports from Jamaica; JMEA uncertain about how new tariffs will be implemented.

There is uncertainty among Jamaican manufacturers about how new import taxes introduced by the United States will be implemented.

President of the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) Sydney Thwaites says it’s an issue that the membership has been keenly watching.

U.S. President Donald Trump today unveiled plans for new import taxes on all goods entering the US.

According to the BBC, the plan sets a baseline tariff on all imports of at least 10% consistent with a proposal Trump made on the campaign last year.

Items from countries that the White House described as the “worst offenders” would face far higher rates for what Trump said was payback for unfair trade policies.

The White House said officials would start charging the 10% tariffs on April 5 with the higher duties starting on April 9.

Mr. Thwaites told Irie FM News members discussed issues surrounding the implementation of the new US tax plan this morning.
