Union says contracted drivers and mechanics at the JFB could withdraw service if adjusted salaries are not paid by August 25

There could be disruptions at the Jamaica Fire Brigade in the coming days, if contracted drivers and mechanics are not paid their newly adjusted salaries on August 25.

The Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA), which represents the workers, say it was informed that the drivers and mechanics will not be paid the new salaries, which took effect in July, in keeping with the completion of negotiations between the brigade and the union.

The JCSA says it categorically rejects this position, as the workers are entitled to receive the new salaries effectively, in line with the agreements governing the ongoing compensation restructuring.

JCSA President Techa Clarke-Griffiths explained that the union will not accept any delay in the payment of the new salaries.

She said the members continue to serve with dedication and commitment, and it is unjust to withhold their lawful earnings.

Speaking with IRIE FM News this afternoon, JCSA’s Acting President Kelvin Thomas said the union had dialogue with the management of the brigade, however they were unable to confirm whether the new salaries would be disbursed on August 25.

He said if the payments are not made, the affected workers may be forced to withdraw service until full payment is made.

IRIE FM News sought a response from Commissioner of the Fire Brigade, Stewart Beckford.

He declined to comment, stating that the union did not provide a copy of the release outlining the concerns to him.
