The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) is reporting that it has 20 cases of patients who have been abandoned by their families.
Director of the Medical Social Workers at UHWI, Sherene Williams-Hemmings noted that the hospital has been seeing an increase in these cases since the COVID pandemic.
She highlighted a case of a 16-year-old boy whose family has not taken him home.
She explained that the process of placing these individuals in suitable facilities has been slow due to high demand.
