UDC: Environmental experts say discolouration in water at Harmony Beach Park due to red tide; beach still closed

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) says environmental experts have found that the source of discolouration in the water at Harmony Beach Park is due to a naturally occurring phenomenon called red tide.

On April 2, the UDC advised that the St. James-based beach park would be temporarily closed to facilitate an investigation into the water’s quality and eventual resolution of the matter.

In providing an update yesterday, the UDC noted that the water’s colour is affected by red tide which is caused by the rapid accumulation of certain types of algae.

The UDC said as a precautionary measure, the beach remains closed to the public while monitoring and mitigation efforts continue.

However, it is assuring the public that all other areas of the park remain open and fully accessible.
