Two constables die in Clarendon crash

Police in Area Three are mourning the deaths of two police constables who died in a crash last evening in Clarendon.

The accident occurred along the York Town main road.

They have been identified as 22 year old Shawn Atkinson and 22 year old Jessica West.

Meanwhile, it’s understood that two other officers were injured in the crash.

Reports are that about 6:30 p.m., the officers were in a service vehicle travelling along the roadway, when the driver allegedly lost control of the unit and it overturned in a ditch.

The cops were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Meantime, the police high command in a statement says it is saddened by the deaths of the two police constables.

The constabulary is expressing condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the constables, who were assigned to the area 3 headquarters in Clarendon.

The force’s Chaplaincy Branch and Welfare Department are providing support to the family members, friends and colleagues of the constables.

The deaths of the two constables bring to 18, the number of people killed in crashes so far in September.

A father and his three month old son died yesterday morning in a crash in Westmoreland.

Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones describes the news of the deaths of the officers as heart breaking.

Meantime, the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) says its saddened at the unfortunate loss of lives of two members of the force.

The group says the government should see road crashes as a national emergency and invest in reducing road deaths.

Todss says there is need for a national summit on road safety.
