Truck drivers at China Harbour Engineering Company construction site in Mammee Bay, St. Ann protest over compensation-related issues
Approximately 20 truck drivers staged a protest this morning at the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) construction site in Mammee Bay, St. Ann to register their frustration over compensation-related issues.
The protest began shortly before 9 A.M., with the drivers blocking the main gate and halting the delivery of aggregates to the site.
Member of Parliament Caretaker for north east St. Ann, Dr. Ryan Simpson, was on location.
He told IRIE FM News that the drivers parked their trucks at the entrance to the site and are awaiting communication from the relevant authorities.
Dr. Simpson said the situation highlights the need for stronger government oversight of foreign-led projects to ensure local workers’ interests are protected.
This morning’s protest follows a similar action in April, when several workers withdrew their service over alleged poor wages and treatment.
The company had committed that it would address the issues.
