Transport Ministry aims to implement rideshare sector regulations by year’s end

It’s hoped that the  regulations for the rideshare sector can be implemented by the end of this year.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz noted that discussions with stakeholders continue apace, so that a submission can be made to cabinet as soon as possible.

Following the Cabinet submission, the matter would go through the regular legislative process in Parliament.

The rideshare industry has come under heavy scrutiny in recent weeks, following the discovery of skeletal remains believed to be those of missing teacher Danielle Anglin.

Ms. Anglin disappeared after she reportedly used ride hailing services.

Police say a man connected to a ride hailing company has confessed to playing a role in her disappearance.

Police also raised concern about the safety and security of persons who use rideshare services, and about how entities that operate ride share applications vet their drivers.

Efforts are now being made to regulate the sector.
