There is a renewed call for motorists to travel with greater care along the nation’s roadways, following the fatal motor vehicle crash in Falmouth, Trelawny today.

The incident which involved a Box truck and a Toyota Hiace bus resulted in the deaths of at least six people and some others injured.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz expressed sadness at the incident and concern about driver behaviour, with the expected increase in traffic over the summer holiday period.

In a statement, Vaz noted that while the Government continues to strengthen road safety measures, every motorist must recognise that the greatest safeguard is responsible behaviour behind the wheel.

The Minister said the unacceptable number of road fatalities recorded this year demands a renewed commitment from every road user.

With the country entering one of its busiest travel periods, Mr Vaz noted that increased vehicle and pedestrian activity associated with summer events, family gatherings, festivals, and island-wide celebrations will place additional demands on the road network.

Mr. Vaz stressed that reducing road fatalities is a shared national responsibility, and called on road users to make safety their highest priority.

Since the start of the year 166 people have been killed in 150 fatal crashes.

So far, July has recorded 20 road fatalities resulting from 19 crashes.
