Track resurfacing at National Stadium set to begin after Gibson Relays
In an exciting development for track and field enthusiasts, IRIE FM Sports can confirm that work to resurface the track at the National Stadium will begin immediately after the staging of the Gibson Relays on Saturday.
The long-awaited project comes at a crucial time as the stadium prepares to host several high-profile events in the coming months, including the ISSA Boys and Girls Athletics Championship in March and Grand Slam Track starting in April.
Major Desmond Brown, General Manager at Independence Park Limited, shared with IRIE FM Sports that the contract for the resurfacing work has officially been signed, clearing the way for contractors to commence the project by next week. While Brown was tight-lipped about specific details, he expressed confidence that the project was on track for a smooth and timely start.
The synthetic surface at the National Stadium was last replaced in 2011 by BSW Regupol, with several sections being upgraded over time. However, the current state of the track requires immediate attention to ensure it meets the standards needed for the upcoming prestigious events.
Grand Slam Track organizers, who recently visited the facility, have already selected their preferred contractor for the resurfacing. According to reports, the estimated time to complete the work is approximately three weeks, meaning the track will be ready in time for the events lined up this spring.
