Former world number one, Tiger Woods, has announced he will not be making his PGA Tour season debut at this week’s Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Woods, 49, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share that he has decided to withdraw from the tournament following the recent death of his 80-year-old mother, Kultida Woods.

The opening round of the tournament, which is scheduled for February 13-16, will take place just nine days after Woods’ mother passed away. Originally set in Pacific Palisades, the event has been relocated to San Diego this year due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.

“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods wrote in his post. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.”

Woods expressed his gratitude to the many who have sent their condolences, adding, “Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”

The 15-time major champion has been playing a limited schedule since his February 2021 car crash, and he shared in December that he was not yet “tournament sharp.” The Genesis Invitational would have marked his first official PGA Tour event since the British Open last July, where he missed the cut.

Since the Open, The 49-year old underwent back surgery in September. He also played in a relaxed 36-hole event with his son in December and competed twice last month in the Indoor Team Golf League he co-founded.

The Genesis Invitational, a PGA Tour signature event, carries a $20 million purse and benefits Woods’ TGR Foundation.
