Thompson vs. Lyles showdown headlines Diamond League action in Poland

World leader and Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson will feature in a massive showdown with Olympic champion Noah Lyles in a blockbuster 100-metre clash, one of the big ticket items on the programme at the Silesia Diamond League meeting in Poland.

This will be the first meeting between the two sprint stars since the Olympic final in Paris just under a year ago, when Lyles edged Thompson by a razor-thin margin—clocking a lifetime best 9.79 seconds, just five-thousandths of a second ahead of the Jamaican. Thompson, however, enters this showdown with the fastest time in the world this season at 9.75 seconds.

Jamaican sprinter Ackeem Blake will also join the field, which includes American champion Kenneth Bednarek. The race is set to start at 9:58 a.m. Jamaica time.

In the women’s 100 metres at 10:53 a.m., local favourite Ewa Swoboda will line up against Jamaican twins Tia and Tina Clayton, American champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, Ivorian veteran Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, and reigning world champion Sha’Carri Richardson.

An impressive 19 Jamaicans will be in action across the day. National champion Danniel Thomas-Dodd will contest the women’s shot put, while Rajindra Campbell takes on the men’s event. The men’s high jump at 8:01 a.m. features Romaine Beckford, followed closely at 8:12 a.m. by the women’s long jump with Ackelia Smith.

Hurdles action begins with the men’s 110m hurdles at 8:40 a.m., where Orlando Bennett and Hansle Parchment will battle world and Olympic champion Grant Holloway. The women’s 100m hurdles at 9:35 a.m. sees world champion Danielle Williams and Ackera Nugent in Heat 1, with national champion Megan Tapper in Heat 2.

The women’s 200 metres at 10:32 a.m. will showcase world champion Shericka Jackson against a strong line-up including Britain’s Amy Hunt, America’s Brittany Brown, and Nigeria’s Favour Ofili.

In the 400m hurdles, Shiann Salmon will contest the women’s race at 10:08 a.m., while world silver medallist Roshawn Clarke lines up in the men’s equivalent at 10:42 a.m.
