The PNP and the JLP welcome JPS’ Hurricane Beryl Relief Programme

Jamaica’s two main political parties have welcomed the decision by the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to offer over 300,000 residential customers a discount on their next bill.

Under its Hurricane Beryl Relief Programme (JPS) will give a 20% discount to customers consuming 150 kWh of electricity, or less, per month.

Prepaid residential customers will receive a one-time $1500 top-up in electricity credit.

The decision follows concerns raised by stakeholders, including Energy Minister Daryl Vaz, who publicly urged the utility provider to demonstrate compassion towards Jamaicans affected by Hurricane Beryl.

Reacting to the discount, Jamaica Labour Party Deputy General Secretary Richard Creary urged JPS to do more to alleviate challenges faced by customers, who are still without electricity.

Meanwhile, the Opposition People’s National Party has expressed relief that the JPS has responded positively to its call for bill discounts post Hurricane Beryl.

Opposition Spokesperson on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, says while he had expected a larger discount, he acknowledges JPS’ efforts to assist customers.
