Bog Walk Gorge remains closed following the derailment of a Windalco bauxite train yesterday
The Bog Walk Gorge in St. Catherine remains closed following the derailment of a Windalco Bauxite Train yesterday.
In an advisory the police urge motorists to use Barry Road, Sligoville or the toll road as alternative routes while repair efforts continue.
The derailment caused several of the train’s boxcars to fall into the Rio Cobre, bringing down utility poles and power lines in the area.
As a result, electricity supply to more than 4,300 customers in Kingston and St. Catherine was disrupted.
In a statement, the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says work is still underway to restore power to most affected customers.
Around 80 customers in Kent Village and areas near the Gorge remain without electricity.
JPS says the ongoing repairs involve complex infrastructure located near the river and will require the continued closure of the Gorge until around 7:00 P.M.
It adds that even after the road reopens, full restoration of power supply to the remaining customers is expected to take several more hours.
Meantime, speaking with IRIE FM News, Communications and Customer Services Manager at the Nationals Works Agency (NWA) Stephen Shaw said no vehicular traffic can be allowed through the area while JPS personnel carry out repair work.
The incident also affected several National Water Commission (NWC) facilities in the Bog Walk and Ewarton areas, which remain out of operation due to the power outages.
This has led to water supply disruptions across sections of St. Catherine and Kingston with some customers experiencing low pressure, intermittent supply or no water at all.
