Teenage boys charged with murder of taxi driver in Lawrence Tavern last year

Police have charged two teenaged boys with several offences including murder, in relation to the death of a taxi driver in Lawrence Tavern St Andrew late last year.

The 15 and 17 year old boys are also charged with Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of Ammunition, Conspiracy to Murder, and Using a Firearm to Commit a Felony.

The charges stem from the killing of 49-year-old a taxi operator Verne Joseph of Manning’s Hill District, Stony Hill, St. Andrew.

Joseph was killed along the Essex Hall Main Road, Content District, last October.

Reports are that the teen boys and a man boarded a white Toyota Probox motor car operated by Joseph, on the pretext of being chartered.

On reaching a section of the main road, the man brandished a firearm and made certain demands of Joseph.

Joseph, in fear for his life, attempted to drive the car into a gully to avoid being harmed.

The man then opened gunfire hitting Joseph in the head, and this caused him to lose control of the motorcar, which crashed into a retaining wall.

The two teens and the man exited the vehicle and attempted to escape.

However, they were intercepted by angry residents.

The man used his firearm to ward off the angry residents and escaped in the area on foot.

The police were summoned and the 2 teens handed over to them.

Joseph was seen slumped over in the passenger seat of his vehicle.

The teens and Joseph were taken to hospital where Joseph was pronounced dead, while the boys were admitted treated and later released into police custody.

The two boys were charged on Monday, based on CCTV footage obtained and a witness statement.

A court date for the teen boys is being finalized.

Investigators say efforts are underway to apprehend the third suspect.
