Teachers and students to have easier access to schools in Troy following implementation of temporary foot bridge
As classes resume for the Easter term today it’s expected that teachers and students of schools in Troy, on the Manchester-Trelawny border will have easier access, now that a temporary footbridge has been installed.
The old Troy Bridge collapsed in August 2021 during the passage of Tropical Storm Grace.
This resulted in residents having to use a make shift zip line system to cross the river.
School teachers had to travel several more miles on the alternative route.
In many cases, affected students opted to transfer to other schools.
Member of Parliament for North West Manchester Mikael Phillips, and Member of Parliament for South Trelawny Marisa Dalrymple Philibert, lobbied for a new bridge.
Work on the new bridge began last year, but adverse weather conditions are hampering the progress.
Last month, the National Works Agency said, a footbridge was established while work continues on the new replacement bridge.
Speaking with Irie Fm News, Mr. Phillips welcomed the advancements made so far.
He said teachers should be able to park their vehicles nearby and walk across the footbridge to get to work.
He expressed hope that students who transferred will consider returning to schools in Troy.
