Taxi operators stage small protest calling on Gov’t to put hold on pending increase in toll rates
Some taxi operators staged a protest along Ferry, in St Catherine, this morning (July 4).
The six-people demonstration was aimed at getting the Government’s attention to their plight to put a hold on the pending increase in toll rates.
The rate increase is to come into effect on Saturday, July 9.
Speaking with IRIE FM news, President of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators, Louis Barton said members are simply hoping for the increase on toll rates to be pushed back, until at least next year.
He stressed that taxi operators are suffering.
Mr. Barton called on the Government to reach out to taxi operators to see how best a solution can be reached.
Meantime, President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS), Egeton Newman noted that, although many people have thrown their support behind the protest, some have refrained from being present, due to the fear of repercussions.
