Taxi operators plying Half-Way-Tree/Papine route in St. Andrew renew call for designated parking facility
Taxi operators who ply the Half-Way-Tree to Papine route in St. Andrew have doubled down on their call for designated parking accommodations.
The operators say the absence of a parking facility has posed traffic congestion and financial challenges.
They claim that they are being ticketed wrongfully by police, which is burdening their pockets.
One taxi operator noted that with a high number of his colleagues plying the route, parking facilities in Half-Way-Tree and Papine Square are greatly needed.
He highlighted the Papine Park as a possible location for the designated parking area for taxi operators.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips has accused his Government counterpart of not having a proper plan to address the parking challenges in town centres across the island.
According to Mr. Phillips, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has made more promises, than providing a serious plan to tackle the parking challenges.
Mr. Phillips who was speaking to reporters during a tour of Papine Square on Friday said organized efforts must be made to address this long-standing issue effectively.
He recommended the lay-by behind the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus stop and the roadway that runs parallel to the Papine market as possible short-term accommodations.
