Taxi operator shot dead by men posing as passengers

A taxi operator was shot and killed by one of two men posing as passengers in Greater Portmore, St. Catherine, last night.

Dead is fifty-four-year-old Delroy Williams of Watervale Avenue, Havendale, Kingston 20.

Reports are that at about 10:50 p.m., Williams was operating a taxi when two men, posing as passengers, entered the vehicle.

Upon reaching a section of Henderson Boulevard, the men requested a stop.

When they alighted from the vehicle, one of the men reportedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and opened fire, hitting Williams.

The men then escaped on foot in the area.

The police were alerted and officers who responded found Williams suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Williams was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations are ongoing.

Meantime, the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) has condemned the murder of the taxi operator in Greater Portmore, St. Catherine, last night.

TODSS President Egeton Newman expressed sadness at Williams’ killing.

He urged taxi operators to remain vigilant.

Mr. Newman pointed out that operators can decide who to transport.
