At least one taxi association is calling on lawmakers to review the Transport Authority Regulations in relation to the playing of sound equipment on Public Passenger Vehicles (PPVs).

In a notice posted on its Facebook page yesterday, The Authority reminded operators of Section 15 of the Transport Authority Regulations 2018, which states that only AM and FM broadcasts should be played in vehicles licensed as taxis.

It said, among other things, PPV operators should not modify or install any equipment capable of playing back any digital video disc recording.

However, it said the regulation shall not apply to a vehicle licensed for contract carriage services.

Speaking to IRIE FM News this morning, President of the St. James Taxi Association Deon Chance said while he does not have many concerns with the regulations, most of the newer vehicles are manufactured with radios that can play back digital video recordings.

He said the authorities must take this into consideration.

In the meantime, he also expressed concern about PPV operators who conduct major modifications on their sound systems.
