Tamarie Redwood’s magical debut powers Jamaica Scorpions to victory in Regional Four-Day Championship opener
Eighteen year-old leg-spinner Tamarie Redwood, delivered a performance for the ages, claiming a career-best 7 wickets on his first-class debut to guide the Jamaica Scorpions to a commanding 178-run victory over the Windward Islands Volcanoes in their first-round clash of the Regional Four-Day Championship at Arnos Vale in St. Vincent.
The Excelsior High School standout, who went wicketless in his 8.5 overs in the first innings, turned the game around spectacularly in the second. Resuming play on the Volcanoes’ overnight score of 65 for 1, Redwood took full control, finishing with impressive figures of 7 for 72. The Volcanoes were dismissed for 241, having lost 6 wickets after lunch while adding just 66 runs to their total.
Shadrack Descarte, who was not out on 21 at lunch, was the second leading scorer for the Volcanoes, making 47 runs. Gian Benjamin also reached double figures, contributing 23 before becoming the last batter to do so. Earlier, Sunil Ambris, the Volcanoes’ captain, top-scored with 56, while the remaining batters struggled to build partnerships. Stephan Pascal (32), Keron Cottoy (31), and Benjamin were all dismissed, as Redwood’s spell that truly decimated the Volcanoes’ batting order.
Redwood had support from Jeavor Royal, who took 2 for 81, allowing the Scorpions to wrap up the match with a dominant performance. Royal’s efforts meant he finished the match with 3 wickets overall.
In their first innings, the Scorpions posted a solid total of 337 before declaring at 277 for 7 in their second innings.
Final Scores:
- Jamaica Scorpions: 337 & 277/7 declared
- Windward Islands Volcanoes: 195 & 241
Meanwhile, at the Brian Lara Academy, the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force. The CCC, resuming Day 4 at 90 for 1, needed 192 more runs to avoid forcing the Red Force to bat again. However, they were bowled out for just 207, handing the Red Force an innings and 75-run victory.
Shaqkere Parris (50) and Damel Evelyn (57) were the highest run-scorers for CCC, but they could not withstand the bowling of left-arm orthodox spinner Khary Pierre, who claimed 7 wickets for just 40 runs to guide the Red Force to a dominant win.
