The thanksgiving service for the life of late Drummer Desmond Desi Jones has been set for Monday, June 3.
In a post on social media, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange shared that the thanksgiving service for the renowned drummer will be held at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity Cathedral on North Street in Kingston.
The post continued noting saxophonist Dean Fraser will lead a tribute from local musicians at the service scheduled to begin at 1pm.
65-year-old Desmond Desi Jones died on May 11. At the time of his death Desi was a lecturer at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts.
He is credited as the founder of the Chalice Group and Skool Band. Throughout his extensive career Desi worked with the likes of Mutabaruka, Marcia Griffiths, Grace Jones, Ernie Rangling, Barrington Levy, Jimmy Cliff, and others.
Desi was awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer for his contribution to the development of Jamaican music in 2019 by the Jamaican Government.
