From the Bob Marley biopic winning an award to Skillibeng and YG Marley’s live performances, Jamaican music and culture shone brightly at the BET Awards on Sunday.
The Paramount Pictures and Tuff Gong film “Bob Marley: One Love,” released in February this year, copped the “Best Movie” award at the 2024 BET Awards.
Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita Marley, the biopic directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green portrays a significant period in the legendary Reggae musician’s life.
Meanwhile, Bob Marley’s grandson, YG Marley, performed during his mother Lauryn Hill’s set, delivering his new song “Survival” and the Reggae hit “Praise Jah in the Moonlight.”
Dancehall deejay Skillibeng also made waves, joining South African singer Tyla and American rapper Gunna for their hit song “Jump.” Tyla herself claimed two awards that night—Best International Act and Best New Artist.
Meanwhile, this marked Skillibeng’s second appearance at the BET Awards, following his debut in 2023 when he participated in a tribute to Busta Rhymes, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
