Supreme Court grants injunction barring police commissioner from removing POA Chairman

The Supreme Court has granted an injunction barring the police commissioner from removing the Chairman of the Jamaica Police Officers’ Association (POA).

Chairman Senior Superintendent Wayne Cameron filed the motion which was heard yesterday by Justice Natalie Hart-Hines.

This comes in the wake of Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake in exercising his powers of superintendence over the force, directing that the position be vacated.

He also directed that in the interim the remaining members of the POA executive, appoint a chairman, who will lead

The association into a special general meeting to elect a new executive in accordance with established conventions.

The Supreme court ordered that an interim injunction is granted restraining the commissioner or others from causing any meeting of the POA to be held, to remove Cameron as Chairman.

It also bars the appointment of a chairman pro tem pending the determination of a hearing for injunction or further orders of the court.

The court also ordered a stay of implementation of the commissioners decisions, as indicated in a statement issued Monday, pending the determination of the inter partes hearing for judicial review or further orders of the court.

Another order by the court is that the matter is fixed for inter partes hearing for interim relief.

The court also granted leave to apply for judicial review on October 8 at 10 AM for 2 hours by video conference or as soon as counsel may be heard.
