Sunshine Girls in Guadeloupe for America’s World Youth Cup qualifiers

GJamaica’s young Sunshine girls having left the island yesterday are now in Guadeloupe where they will compete in the America’s Netball World Youth Cup qualifiers.

It comes after their original departure plans had to be modified due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl that resulted in the closure of the Norman Manley International Airport last Tuesday.

The Junior Sunshine Girls, who prepared for the tournament by competing as St. Andrew Shiners in the Red Stripe Flavours Netball Jamaica Elite League, are drawn in pool ‘A’ alongside Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Cayman Islands and Canada.

Pool ‘B’ meanwhile comprises Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, St Maarten and tournament host Guadeloupe.

The Jamaicans, who open their campaign against St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, are led by coach Phyliss Thompson and assistant Nicole Aiken-Pinnock.

Making up the squad are shooters Kellian Hunter, Shanai Martin, Kadedra Wright and Nickesha Powell.

The mid-court features Shaqwuan Hamilton, Danielle Laidlaw, Jada Ricketts and Maya Williams, while the defensive quartet includes Captain Roxonian Mclean, Tianna Reid, Deandra Edwards and Fentonian Henry.

The eight-day tournament which gets underway today is scheduled to end on July 15.

The top 3 teams will book their spots at the 2025 World Youth Netball Cup to be held in Gibraltar.
