Statue to honour legendary boxer Mike ‘The Body Snatcher’ McCallum at National Stadium

A statue honouring the memory and legacy of Jamaica’s greatest boxer, Mike “The Body Snatcher” McCallum, will be erected at Statue Park, National Stadium Complex, in Kingston.

The announcement was made by Minister of Sport Olivia Grange, who confirmed the government’s commitment to celebrating McCallum’s contribution to the nation’s sporting history. Minister Grange was speaking earlier today at the Service of Thanksgiving for McCallum’s life, held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kingston.

“As we celebrate Mike’s life, I want to indicate today that as we redevelop the stadium complex and build a new stadium we will ensure that a statue of Mike McCallum is placed center of Statue Park to celebrate and to recognize his contribution to Jamaica,” Minister Grange said.

McCallum, widely regarded as one of the finest fighters to ever emerge from the Caribbean, was a three-division world champion, capturing titles at light middleweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight. Renowned for his exceptional body-punching ability—earning him the nickname “The Body Snatcher”—he left an indelible mark on the global boxing stage.

The Jamaican icon passed away on May 31, 2025, in Las Vegas at the age of 68.

Minister Grange said the statue will stand among Jamaica’s other sporting greats at the National Stadium, ensuring that McCallum’s remarkable achievements and pioneering spirit will be remembered by future generations.
