Stand-off between PNP councillors and JLP mayor leads to abrupt end of Clarendon Municipal Corporation monthly meeting

A stand-off between People’s National Party (PNP) councillors in the Clarendon Municipal Corporation and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Mayor Joel Williams led to the abrupt end of the corporation’s monthly meeting this morning.
The standoff followed a debate over who should assume the position of Mayor of May Pen.
PNP councillors are of the view that the mayor should be chosen from among them.
The issue arose following last month’s by-election in the Aenon Town Division, when Delroy Dawson defeated the JLP’s Suzette Barton.
Dawson’s victory resulted in a tie between the number of PNP and JLP councillors, with 11 councillors each.
Speaking with IRIE FM News today, PNP Minority Leader and Councillor for the Hayes Division, Scean Barnswell, stated that the PNP councillors plan to table a motion addressing how the corporation will function amid the tie.
Barnswell also underscored the PNP’s stance that a mayor should be appointed from their side, given that they secured the popular vote.
He insisted that this issue must be addressed before any progress can be made on the matter.
