St. Elizabeth residents protest yesterday’s fatal shooting of three men by police
Several residents of Speculation District in St Elizabeth took to the streets this morning (July 20) in protest of yesterday’s fatal shooting of three men by the police.
The residents who are demanding justice for the slain men gathered with placards on Oxford Main Road.
Dead are 19-year-old Najae Smith, a resident of Speculation District, 21-year-old Shamar Brown and 20-year-old Ricardo Salmon, both residents of Oxford District.
Reports are that around 4:45 pm, a shootout ensued between the police and the men.
When the shooting subsided, the men were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were pronounced dead at hospital.
Police say a .38 Taurus revolver, with 2 rounds of ammunition and a Berretta .22 pistol with 9 .22 rounds of ammunition were seized.
Speaking with IRIE FM news, Head of the St Elizabeth Police Superintendent, Dwight Daley said the police are maintaining a presence in the area.
He noted that the residents are having a peaceful protest.
Meantime, Assistant Commissioner of INDECOM, Hamish Campbell said the weapons of the cops and those that were allegedly seized by the cops have been taken into evidence.
Campbell called on anyone who might have information on the incident to come forward.
