St.Ann’s Bay Mayor says works to establish bus park in Discovery Bay to get underway soon
Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Michael Belnavis, says works to establish a bus park in Discovery Bay, St. Ann, are to get underway soon.
This comes after taxi drivers operating between Discovery Bay and Brown’s Town withdrew their services yesterday to register their frustration over the lack of a bus park in Discovery Bay.
In November last year, similar action was taken due to the absence of a parking facility.
Following that protest, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz had a meeting with the operators, and arrangements were made with Noranda Bauxite Company to provide land that will facilitate the establishment of a transport centre.
However, the facility has not yet been established.
Speaking with IRIE FM News last evening, Mr. Belnavis said the St. Ann Municipal Corporation recently acquired the land from the company, and works are slated to commence in the coming weeks.
He said he will tour the area today.
Meantime, the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) is calling on the government to address issues affecting public operators urgently.
The appeal follows yesterday’s protest by some taxi drivers who ply routes that terminate in Discovery Bay, St. Ann.
TODSS President, Egeton Newman, is urging the government to meet with stakeholders to address these and other issues.
