St. Ann Municipal Corporation expedites repair work on Prickly Pole roadway which collapsed under a truck, killing the driver, on Wednesday

The St. Ann Municipal Corporation is expediting repair work on a section of the prickly pole roadway in Claremont, which collapsed under a truck, killing the driver, on Wednesday.

Dead is 45-year-old Christopher Richards of Claremont.

Reports are that Richards had been hauling material to another section of the roadway that’s being rehabilitated.

On his second trip to the site, the rain fell heavily, and the roadway caved under the weight of the vehicle, causing it to roll down a deep ravine.

The side man reportedly jumped from the rolling vehicle, but Richards was crushed to death.

Chairman of the corporation, Mayor Michael Belnavis told IRIE FM News that Richards was well known to the councillors for the Bensonton and Claremont divisions.

He said the incident put all councillors in a sombre mood during Thursday’s meeting of the corporation.

Mayor Belnavis said a team from the corporation visited the accident site yesterday, to conduct assessments.

He added that the corporation will be supporting Richards’ relatives.
