Spike in stabbing incidents raises concern about safety of the island’s schools

Concern has again been raised about the safety of the island’s schools.

This following two incidents at educational institutions in Clarendon and St. Andrew yesterday.

In the latest incident at the Rousseau Primary School in St. Andrew, a man was shot dead.

The deceased’s identity has not been released, but reports suggest he was a parent of a student who attends the school.

And hours earlier at Knox College in Clarendon, a grade 11 student was stabbed by another during a confrontation. The wounded student has been hospitalised.

Yesterday’s stabbing incident follows two similar violent incidents in Trelawny and Manchester last week.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, last evening Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) president Dr. Mark Smith, said in relation to violence in schools, Jamaica is on a slippery slope.

He said domestic violence is among factors contributing to the issue.

Dr. Smith said it’s important that citizens learn how to deal with disputes.

He said everyone must play their part in addressing the issue.
