Spanish Town Mayor’s lawyer to approach DPP about absence of assault charge against woman who accused his client

The attorney representing Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott has signalled his intent to approach the Director of Public Prosecutions about the absence of an assault charge against the woman who accused his client.

Charles Ganga-Singh brought up the issue in the St. Elizabeth Parish Court this morning, when the Mayor appeared before Judge Steve Walters.

Mayor Scott has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property, following an incident at a polling station in the parish on September 3, Election Day.

Reports are that at about midday that day,  66-year-old Scott, who was contesting the Southeast St. Elizabeth seat for the People’s National Party, visited the polling station and stayed a little longer than the allotted time.

Police say an agent’s attempt to inform him that his allotted time at the facility was up resulted in a commotion.

It was further reported that another agent intervened to quell the uproar and was allegedly struck to the face by Scott before his security detail removed him from the location.

During today’s proceedings, Mr. Ganga-Singh maintained that the mayor was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a mob.

He also expressed concern that no charge has been laid against the plaintiff, despite Mayor Scott formally filing a police report on the matter.

Mayor Scott pleaded not guilty to the assault charge.

He is to return to court on November 27.
