Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott appeared in court on assault charge this morning, to return November 27

Spanish Town Mayor, Norman Scott, appeared in the St. Elizabeth Parish Court this morning, in relation to an incident at a polling station in the parish on September 3, Election Day.

Mayor Scott has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property.

Several lawyers led by Tom Tavares Finson represented the complainant, while Charles Ganga-Singh represented Mayor Scott.

During today’s proceedings, Tavares Finson noted that he intends to apply for a fiat to prosecute Scott himself. A fiat is a document from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that gives a private lawyer the authority to prosecute a case.

Mayor Scott is to return to court on November 27.

Police say at about midday, September 3, 66-year-old Scott, who was contesting the South East St. Elizabeth seat for the People’s National Party, visited the polling station and stayed a little longer than the allotted time.

Police say an agent’s attempt to inform him that his allotted time at the facility was up resulted in a commotion.

It was reported that another agent intervened to quell the uproar and was allegedly struck to the face by Scott before his security detail removed him from the location.

Following the incident, a report was made to the police, and an investigation was launched into the matter.

The Mayor’s lawyer maintained that while he respects the ongoing legal process, it is important to highlight that his client was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a mob.
