Spanish Town business community remains in a wait-and-see mode, as many operators are still apprehensive due to unrest in the area

The business community in Spanish Town, St. Catherine remains in a wait-and-see mode as many operators are still apprehensive about the resumption of normal operations due to ongoing unrest in the area.

Several businesses shuttered their doors today amid a flare-up of violence in the old capital.

This follows the police fatal shooting of an alleged gang leader.

Othneil Lobban, otherwise called “Thick Man” an alleged top leader of the One Order gang was shot dead yesterday.

Upset residents of Spanish Town blocked several roadways and set fire to at least one store.

The police have responded and are working to maintain order in the area.

President of the St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce, Dennis Robotham noted that the situation is an all-too-familiar playbook with violence causing business operators to lose millions.

Mr. Robotham said the police have assured the business community that the area is safe.

He said even if some businesses reopen tomorrow, normal commercial activity will be stagnant for a few more days.
