Something must be done! – JAAA to lobby for stricter measures to protect the country’s athletics program

Jamaica will be putting forward a formal complaint to the World Athletics congress in Japan – following the news that four of the country’s elite field events athletes have switched allegiance to Turkey, just days before the National Championships.

The athletes include Olympic medallists Roje Stona, Wayne Pinnock, Rajindra Campbell, and Jaydon Hibbert.

While addressing concerns about Turkey’s strategy to go for financial inducement to get athletes to switch, JAAA’s President Garth Gayle speaking at a press conference on Monday said Jamaica’s voice will be heard at the congress along with other countries facing similar circumstances.

Meanwhile first vice president of the JAAA’s Ian Forbes spoke to what some of the areas in which World Athletes need to look at while admitting the athletes will have to do what is in their best interest.

President of the Jamaica Olympic Association Christopher Samuda is calling for the reconvening of the National Sports Council.

This arising out of the recent switching of allegiance of some of Jamaica’s elite athletes to Turkey squarely on the basis of financial rewards.

Samuda posited that just like how the National Sports Council was able to formalize the national health and life insurance for the country’s athletes the same can be done to look at other areas.
