Some shelters serving vulnerable communities still empty
As hurricane Melissa impacts the island there is concern that some shelters are empty despite being active in areas that serve vulnerable communities.
One hundred and thirty three of 880 designated emergency shelters are open and housing displaced people.
Up to late last night, shelters in St. Mary, St. Ann and Hanover did not report any shelter occupants.
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie expressed concern that with the storm expected to pass over western parishes, persons should seek refuge at shelters in Hanover.
Based on forecast data from the met office, areas including Lucea and Chester Castle in Hanover are expected to face severe weather impacts.
Mr. McKenzie also urged residents in at-risk areas in Westmoreland to get to safety as quickly as possible.
