Some residents who depend on the Rio Cobre in St. Catherine have threatened to call for a boycott of companies they believe are responsible for repeatedly polluting the river.

In recent times, the Rio Cobre has been subjected to several effluent spills, some of which have resulted in fish kills.

The most recent pollution incident happened a little over a week ago, resulting in some of the residents being even more frustrated about the situation.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) confirmed the incident, and said it had launched an investigation into the matter.

However, some residents, including advocacy group, Friends of Rio Cobre believe more must be done to show the entities allegedly responsible that their actions will not be tolerated.

The group’s President, Kestonard Gordon said in addition to the hope that NEPA will strip these entities of their operational permits, persons should boycott them if they continue to pollute the river.
